IPS (in-plane switching) is a screen technology for liquid-crystal displays (LCDs). It was designed to solve the main limitations of the twisted nematic field effect (TN) matrix LCDs which were prevalent in the late 1980s. 1.The development history about IPS Monitor

Until 1990, Doctor Guenter Baur proposed a new LCD display design method in Germany. In the new plan, the old outdated TN design ideas were discarded, and the molecular arrangement structure of the liquid crystal film was optimized, and the invention patents in the United States and other countries were obtained and the possibility of preliminary materialized production was obtained.
With the continuous sharing and dissemination of this design idea, more and more countries and regions have optimized and improved this design idea, especially the Hitachi Group in Japan. Their engineering research and development team carefully studied various practical operation details of IPS display monitor technology and chose to use thin-film transistor arrays as the matrix interconnection method to avoid the messy distribution of pixels. In addition, they have further improved the viewing angle of the LCD liquid crystal display by optimizing the electrode shape.
Since then, Hitachi Group has become the dominant player in the IPS Monitor field with this advanced and improved technology, until 1996, it was replaced by the multi-domain LCD optical patterning technology developed by South Korea’s Samsung Group.
2.Technical Principle about IPS Monitor
As the picture showed on the right，both the linear polarizing filters P and A have transmission axes in the same direction. In order to obtain the 90-degree twisted nematic structure of the LC layer between the two glass plates without applying an electric field (OFF state), the inner surface of the glass plate is processed so that adjacent LC molecules are aligned at right angles. The molecular structure is actually the same as in TN LCD. However, the arrangement of the electrodes e1 and e2 is different. Because they are on the same plane and on a single glass plate, the electric field they generate is substantially parallel to the glass plate. The figure is not drawn to scale: the LC layer is only a few microns thick, so it is very small compared to the distance between the electrodes.
The LCD molecule has a positive dielectric anisotropy and makes its own long axis parallel to the applied electric field. In the closed state (as shown on the left), the incident light L1 is linearly polarized by the polarizer P. The twisted nematic LC layer rotates the polarization axis of the passing light by 90 degrees, so no light passes through the polarizer A ideally. In the on state, a sufficient voltage is applied between the electrodes, and a corresponding electric field E is generated, which rearranges the LC molecules, as shown in the right figure. Here, the light L2 can pass through the polarizer A.
In fact, there are other embodiments that have different LC molecular structures, such as without any distortion in the OFF state. Since both electrodes are on the same substrate, they take up more space than TN matrix electrodes. This will also reduce contrast and brightness.
